Is blogging still a thing for SEO?

Is Blogging Still a Thing?

I've been chatting a lot about blogging recently. With AI blasting onto the scene this year and Google making regular updates to their helpful content system, it's certainly a reasonable question to ask.

The simple answer is yes.

But, of course, nothing is ever that simple.

As we see more and more content being created, much of it coming out as generic content pumped out by AI, the most important factor in blogging is creating quality content.

High-quality, keyword-rich blogs remain one of the top strategies for boosting your website's SEO. Google loves fresh content, and the more your keywords rank on your site, the better your chances of being discovered in searches for those keywords.

Blogs also help you build authority online. High-quality blogs have a better chance of being linked from other reputable sources as a resource. Then, you gain traffic from those sites too.

I know, writing content is really hard for some people. Myself included! Here are a few strategies to get started:

  • Plan your content strategy first - Brainstorm topic ideas based on your audience’s interests and your expertise.
  • Stay consistent - It's more important to be consistent than frequent. If you can do one post per month, do it! Pick a schedule that’s realistic for you.
  • Promote your blog - Share your content on social media and your email marketing list.
  • Repurpose your content - Since blogs are long-form pieces of content, there are a ton of ways you can reuse them to save time on other marketing efforts.

If writing content just not your thing, or you don't have time, consider hiring a copywriter with SEO experience. It's better to have regular updates with well-crafted content than nothing.

And outsourcing your copy to a quality contractor can be affordable, with a strong ROI if it brings more traffic to your site.

Can ChatGPT just pump out blog content for me?

No.

I mean, technically that is possible but that is arguably worse than not utilizing blogging as a tactic at all.

AI is great for ideation, research (to some extent), and can help you organize your thoughts if writing is a challenging task for you.

However, not only is Google penalizing low quality content (check out their latest helpful content system updates), many of us can spot AI content when we see it.

So in addition to it being a technical issue, it's also a bad look. 🫠

If you need help getting started, I have a few resources on the Woods MarCom blog.

Batch content creation has been a great tactic for me personally, as someone who can be found putting off their writing until literally everything else is done.

If writing is hard for you - I see you. We are in this together!
